Breast Prosthesis

Prosthesis: an external breast form that may be worn in a bra after a mastectomy. Also, the technical name of a breast form that is placed under the skin in breast reconstruction.

Exactly what is a breast prosthesis?

A breast prosthesis is an artificial breast usually made of silicone gel with a smooth plastic covering. Breast prosthesis (also called breast forms) are typically used after surgery in which some or all of the breast tissue has been removed. A breast form can be worn to simulate the natural breast shape. The most common type of breast form is the full breast form which replaces the entire breast. Also available are partial breasts forms, or unique shaped forms that can fill voids left by less radical surgeries. Breast forms can quite simply just be slipped into a bra, or they can be applied to the body with a medical adhesive. Some options now available on forms include a soft fabric backing to lay against the skin. For many users the fabric backing is more comfortable and it also allows the skin to breathe.

Types of forms on the market: Foam, Silicone, Fiberfill

The external Silicone Breast Forms are the most popular since they are weighted and have the most realistic feel. There are some available that have a simple adhesive back that can be used over and over again. These adhesive backs are skin friendly and hypoallergenic.
Cost is also a factor that must be taken into account. Silicone forms are usually more expensive than foam or other forms. However, the silicone forms are a better quality. When looking at silicone forms; the higher the priced silicone forms does not necessarily mean the best product to fit you.

There are many options out there to choose from. The most important thing to keep in mind is what you feel comfortable in. If you feel comfortable, confident, and happy, then you will come off as confident to those around you.
